The 2018 Victorian Seniors Festival takes place across Victoria throughout October.
The Festival experience is all about getting out and about in your local community and beyond. It’s the chance to try something new or different, in a friendly atmosphere, at little or no cost. Catch up with friends at a Festival event, or meet people when you explore something on your own.
Every council gets involved and have all kinds of different events happening.
This year the theme is “Get Social”. To help you do exactly that, there are more than 2500 events organised across theatre, music, film and literature.
There are also open days at neighbourhood houses and men’s sheds, as well as morning teas, tours, and fitness and sport programs.
The Festival opens with Celebration Day at Federation Square on Sunday 7 October, a day of music and dancing by a number of performers, including Kutcha Edwards, the Shiamak Bollywood dancers and the Silver Grove Swing Band.
At other times you can choose from many events, such as a free concert at the Town Hall on 14 October by the Pearly Shells swing band, playing their own arrangements of big band classics and some originals, or the Vintage Train Ride from Castlemaine through the Goldfields region.
All Victorians holding a Seniors Card can enjoy eight days of free public transport from the 7th to the 14th October.
This is not limited to the metropolitan train, tram and bus services. It includes V-Line services, making access to events in regional areas easier. Also, local transport services which are not part of the myki system will allow you to travel for free simply by showing your card.
Booklets containing details and a full program are currently available free from Council offices, libraries, supermarkets and other distribution outlets.
You can also check your local Council site, or browse and book online at www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au.
