If you work out regularly in the gym, you will know that none of your clothes need the laundry as much as your workout gear. Giving it the right attention will help it last longer and save you money.

    According to cleaning expert Jolie Kerr, this is easily done if you follow some basic rules.

    Turn clothes inside out

    Odour-causing bacteria come from body sweat and dead skin cells that rub off on the inside of clothes. Turning your gym clothes inside out before washing, to give the water and detergent better access to the source of the smells.

    Detergent dose

    Using more detergent won’t clean your clothes better. Instead, it leaves a buildup of soap residue, trapping odours in your clothes. This can also cause skin irritation when you wear them. For the same reason, never use fabric softener.

    To boost your detergent's power, add a quarter-cup to a half-cup of white vinegar or baking soda to the wash.

    Wash like fabrics together

    Never wash gym clothes with towels, fleecy items, or heavy garments like jeans and sweatshirts. Gym gear with stretch in it will pick up stray lint in the wash. Heavy items can lead to pilling and damage.


    The elastic in a lot of gym gear is badly affected if it is exposed to high heat. Wash your workout clothes in cold water, and air-dry them if possible. If you use a dryer, choose the low or no-heat setting.

    Protein shake bottle

    Rinse out the bottle as soon as possible after the protein drink has been drunk. Otherwise there will be hard residue left in the bottle, which is very hard to remove. Once the bottle is rinsed, it can be easily cleaned in the sink or dishwasher.
