A stuck accelerator is one of the leading causes of accidents. This is because it makes it very difficult to control the speed of the vehicle, and distraught drivers can continue to hit the accelerator.

If you do not have the knowledge and experience to deal with this situation, it is likely to cause a terrible accident.

    Keep calm

A driver's first response to a stuck accelerator is likely to be panic, resulting in loss of control. The first thing to do in any emergency situation is to try to stay calm in any way.

    Don't turn off the engine

Turning off the engine cannot slow the car down, because of its great inertia. This also makes the steering wheel stiff and hard to control.

In some cars, turning off the engine automatically locks the steering wheel. The situation will be even more dangerous if your car is still running fast with the steering wheel locked.

    Move to Neutral

The problem is that there is no way to slow down a fast moving car with a stuck accelerator. Hitting the brakes is not effective, because they will quickly wear or burned, and become disabled.

You have to calm down and act quickly. Immediately move the gear stick to the N position, or into neutral if your car has manual gears.

Turn on the hazard lights, to warn the car behind you. Then gradually slow your car, move it to the side of the road, and brake.
