Prostate cancer, which affects the prostate gland, is most commonly found in men. In Australia more than 3000 men die of prostate cancer each year, more than the number of women who die of breast cancer.

It is most common in men over 65, but can develop much earlier, from around the age of 50. At this time the cancer is usually small and slow growing, so it is easily ignored.

Men should have a regular checkup, at least once a year. This can be done with a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) test, requiring only a blood sample.

You should also pay attention to the following symptoms, which can indicate prostate cancer.

    • Frequent urination, even though you do not drink too much water, can be a sign of prostate cancer, as well as diabetes or bladder infections.

    • You may have some urinary problems, such as difficulty starting and keeping the urine flow.

    • If you see urine in your underwear, and it happens without your knowledge, even after you have urinated, it may be a case of bladder leakage. This is may indicate that prostate cancer has become severe.

    • If your sperm count abruptly goes down over time, this can be a sign of prostate cancer.

    • Blood in the urine, or abnormally dark urine, can be a sign of urinary tract infections, diabetes, or kidney stones, as well as prostate cancer.

    • Usually, it is not painful when a man ejaculates, so if you feel pain in the genitals or around the bladder during ejaculation, it may be a sign of bladder or prostate cancer.

    • Constant pain and pressure in and around the rectum may be another sign of prostate cancer. The growth and multiplication of cancer cells in the prostate may affect the rectum because the two organs are close.

    • Prostate cancer can also cause pain and tenderness in men's pelvic area, along with pain in the lower back and thighs. This is because cancerous growth in the prostate can affect tissues in the surrounding areas.

    • If you lose weight suddenly and have one or more of the above symptoms, this will very likely be a sign of prostate cancer. In this case, seek immediate medical attention.
