Five refurbished stations are open to passengers, and many level crossings are gone for good. However, it was always part of the plan to reclaim open space as park and recreation land for locals.
The total amount of open space and parkland reclaimed is 22.5 hectares, equal to about 11 MCGs. Open space works are set to be fully complete by the end of the year.
The carnival will be held along the entire rail corridor from Carnegie, Murrumbeena, and Hughesdale to Clayton and Noble Park.
Plenty of activity will be on offer for all ages, alongside new open space features including sports courts and outdoor gyms.
There will be live music, roving performers, free food and giveaways, kids’ rides, and activities and demonstrations from local sporting and community groups.
More details will become available in the next few weeks at levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/events.
