Christmas is very much in the air now, with Santa visiting shopping centres, households all over Melbourne putting up lights and decorations, and everything from office parties to local carol singing livening up your neighbourhood.

    There are also many public events for the family to enjoy, and gather with other families to celebrate the start of the holiday season. Check your local Council website to see what is on offer.

    Here are a few of the larger traditional events which delight Melburnians every year.

    Fed Square Christmas Projections

    Federation Square and Docklands come alive with a kaleidoscope of colourful Christmas light projections. Daily 9pm to 10.30pm every 30 minutes until 25 December. No projections on 8 and 14 December.

    Japanese Festive Market

    For gift shopping, Kimono House Festive Market returns with a range of unique Japanese gifts, including Christmas ornaments, handbags, Japanese styled bags, tenugui and much more. Open at Level 2, Nicholas Building, 37 Swanston Street 10am to 5pm, Tuesday to Saturday, until 22 December.

    Santa’s Magical Kingdom

    Now in its 7th exciting year, Santa's Magical Kingdom under the Big Top at Caulfield Racecourse brings the magic of Christmas to life with Santa Claus, Mrs Claus, Rudolph and many special friends.

    From 10 to 14 December, in selected sessions only, there will be a special celebration in honour of Rudolph the Reindeer's Birthday.

    Dandenong Carols in Harmony Square

    Come along to Harmony Square, 225 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong on Friday 14 December, 6.30pm, and sing along at this free family event, or simply enjoy the exciting performances and interactive activities. For details see

    Brimbank Carols by Candlelight

    Overnewton Castle, 51 Overnewton Road, Keilor. Sunday 16 December 5pm-9pm. Tickets $20 family of four, $8 single, $5 concessions.
