Diet is the first step to good hair care, and the two most important things in your diet are iron and protein. You need about 12 mg of iron daily, and you need protein to strengthen your hair.

    For iron, eat plenty of leafy vegetables, fish, pumpkin seeds, beans, chickpea, soybeans and cereals.

    Proteins which are also rich in amino acids include cheese, milk, soy, lentils, peas, quinoa and yogurt.

    As well as diet, you should note the following things for best hair care.

    • It's normal to lose 100 to 150 strands of hair a day, so don't worry too much about daily hair loss.
    • Comb wet hair very carefully, because it is fragile and breaks easily. Use a broad toothed comb and run it from the roots to the ends of your hair as gently as possible.
    • Trim your hair every few weeks to get rid of those brown and rough split ends. Cut about a centimetre off your hair every 6 to 8 weeks to avoid the split ends growing out again.
    • Don't wash your hair everyday, always apply some conditioner to the ends, and try to use the same brand of shampoo and conditioner.
    • Rinsing conditioner out with cold water is good for both strength and shine.
    • If  shampoo leaves you feeling any kind of irritation on the scalp, or you find your hair drying up over time, this may be caused by sulphates in the shampoo. Change to a shampoo that's sulphate-free.
    • If you have dry hair, avoid colouring.
