Hunting Bargains On The Garage Sale Trail

Garage sales have long been a popular way for people to pass on items they no longer need to others who are keen to snap up a bargain. Every weekend, all over Melbourne, the sales bring people out to browse over whatever is being offered.

Everyone benefits, because the items for sale are usually less expensive, and there is no packaging required. The sales can be organised by a single household, or by several families, friends or neighbours getting together to hold a combined sale.

Whitehorse Council has made an annual event of this practice, with its Garage Sale Trail. The Council invites households of the area to register their garage sales on a list compiled by the Council.

Garage Sale Trails began in Sydney in 2010, and now include over 150 councils around Australia. Individuals, community groups and businesses organise their garage sales for the same weekend, using a central website to advertise them.

Whitehorse Councillor Sharon Ellis says shopping at garage sales has many benefits for the environment and the local community. “The Garage Sale Trail aims to reduce waste to landfill by selling reusable household items that others can benefit from.”

This year the Garage Sale Trail will be held on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 October.

Whitehorse residents can register their garage sale right up until the first day of the sale at www.garagesaletrail.com.au.

Shoppers can get a map of garage sales by entering their suburb or postcode in the search box at
