    These tips come from comments by home cooks on online recipes.

    • When boiling pasta, place a wooden spoon over the pot to keep the water from rising too fast.
    • Sprinkle a little salt on ice and it will melt more slowly.
    • Use the jam stuck to the sides of an “empty” jar to make a fruity vinaigrette instead. Add equal parts oil and vinegar to the jar, with salt and pepper to taste, and shake well.
    • When roasting a whole chicken, salt it, then chill it in the fridge, uncovered, for the day. This seasons the chicken, and dries out the skin so it crisps perfectly.
    • Sharpen your knives often. A blunt knife is more dangerous. You can easily to cut yourself because you have to press harder.
    • When you saute onions, add a pinch of baking soda. The onions brown quicker, in almost half the cooking time.
