The modern Mothers Day tradition was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother at St Andrews Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. The church now holds the International Mothers Day Shrine. It became an official US holiday in 1914, but Jarvis later criticised the holiday as too commercial and tried to have it removed from the calendar.

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele.

    Famous Mothers

    Mencius's mother

There are many stories about the mother of the Confucian philosopher Mencius (372–289 BC). One story says that when he saw him playing around instead of studying his books, she broke the shuttle on her weaving loom. When Mencius asked her why she did that, she said a boy who didn’t study was as useless as a loom with a broken shuttle.

    Mary Wollstonecraft

She was born in 1759, but her ideas about feminism are surprisingly modern. She rejected the notion that women were incapable of reason, promoted women’s education, and opposed marriage, which she considered to be a form of slavery.

    Flora Tristan

Flora Tristan, the grandmother of French painter Paul Gauguin, was a French socialist writer and activist. Another early feminist, she argued that the progress of women's rights was directly related with the progress of the working class. She travelled around France handing out political writings and giving talks on social equality until she died from typhoid fever in 1844.
