    New Motorcycle Safety Initiative

A $1 million State Government package, to be funded through the Motorcycle Safety Levy, will introduce a range of safety, educational and rider mobility initiatives.

Motorcyclists make up less than 4% of registered vehicles, yet riders account for 15% of deaths and serious injuries on our roads. Already this year 13 motorcyclists have lost their lives.

A learner and novice rider pack will be developed, containing tips and resources to give motorcyclists a safe start on the road. The pack will include high-visibility vests and other safety equipment.

A motorcycle protective clothing star rating system, known as MotoCAP, will be further promoted, and a trial allowing motorcyclists to use bus lanes is being.

    Deaths Blamed On Robo-Debt Notice

According to data released by the Department of Human Services, over 2000 people died after receiving a “robo-debt” Centrelink debt notice.

The robo-debt system identifies possible overpayments by comparing Centrelink income reports with Tax Office data. It was set up in 2016, and broadened at the end of 2017.

About one fifth of those who died were aged under 35. Nearly a third had complex needs like mental illness, drug use or were victims of domestic violence. Half were equally divided between Newstart and Disability Support Pension recipients.

The figures cover a period from July 2016 to October 2018. During this period Human Services sent out 900,000 discrepancy notices.

    Volunteers Wanted For Hip Study

La Trobe Sport and Exercise Medicine research centre is investigating physiotherapy for hip and groin pain, and needs volunteers to help in the study.

Participants must be aged 18-50 years, have pain around hip and groin area for more than 6 weeks, and have not had hip surgery.

The 6 month study requires you to attend La Trobe University (or a clinic in Ballarat) for a hip examination, perform some physical activities, and answer some questionnaires about your hip pain.

Volunteers can receive one of two free physiotherapy treatments weekly, for 3 months, or receive a free gym membership to continue the program, for a further 3 months.

For further information, please phone Sally Coburn on 0484 761 237, or email s.coburn@latrobe.edu.au.
