A recent report from the government shows Victorian alpine resorts contributed $911 million of Gross State Profit to the state’s economy in that time. The resorts also generated nearly 7,900 jobs in winter, and more than 1,200 jobs over summer.

Lake Mountain is the closest resort, just 120 km away. Mt Baw Baw is about a two hour drive. Mt Buller and nearby Mt Stirling are around three hours. To Falls Creek, Hotham and Dinner Plain the journey is a little longer, about four and a half hours.

Mt Buller has Victoria’s largest lift network, with 22 lifts capable of moving 40,000 people an hour. The lifts give skiers and snowboarders access to over 300 hectares of terrain, for all levels of ability. More than 7000 beds are available for accommodation.

Mt Stirling is well known for cross-country and backcountry skiing. You can also enjoy alpine touring, backcountry snowboarding, and snowshoeing. Other snow-related activities include snow play and snow camping. The entry fee for Mt Buller includes entry into Mount Stirling.

Falls Creek has Australia’s longest beginner run under lights with Night Skiing. This takes place on Wednesday and Saturday nights 6pm to 9pm, if  snow and weather conditions are right. You can also ride a snow bike on a ski trail.

Mt Hotham is Australia’s highest Alpine Resort. It has some of Australia’s deepest powder and steepest terrain. Mt Hotham Alpine Village is on a ridge with spectacular views of the Great Dividing Range and its steep valleys. The scenery is like the alps of Europe, Japan and North America.

Lake Mountain is the most accessible resort, popular for quick day trips or weekend adventures. The good natural snowfall is great for snow play, snow shoeing, tobogganing, cross country skiing and making your own snowman. Thanks to its Wyss Blanc CC 30 snow making machine, it is Australia’s only resort with snow at temperatures up to 25°C.

Mt Baw Baw snowfields have the closest downhill skiing and snowboarding to Melbourne. There are over 30 hectares of downhill terrain, seven ski lifts, several snow play areas, 10 km of cross-country trails and unlimited terrain to explore. At the Kids Club children can learn how to ski or improve their skills.

Dinner Plain, with no entry fee, is nestled among snow gums at 1562 metres, 10km from Hotham. It is known for  remarkable alpine architecture, with around 300 private chalets within walking distance from the village centre. It has a huge range of quality food venues, including Australia’s highest brewery. Snow play activities include tobogganing, snowshoe tours, dog sledding, cross country skiing and disc golf, and the beginner ski run is perfect for those in the snow for the first time.
